Report published: 8 September 2026 · International (91 countries and economies) · Reviewed: 14 September 2026

The OECD’s PISA 2025 results include evidence about how more than 760,000 15-year-olds use artificial intelligence. Across OECD countries, 46% reported using AI chatbots at least weekly to help them learn.

Pupils who used AI for specific schoolwork, including summarising texts, drafting and research, scored about 20 science points lower than non-users after adjustment for socio-economic status. Weekly general-purpose users performed similarly to non-users. Pupils who regularly used AI and had classroom opportunities to assess AI-generated information tended to score slightly higher.

For educators

These are associations from self-reported use, not proof that AI caused better or worse results. The practical distinction is between replacing effort and using AI critically. Classroom activity can therefore make reasoning visible: pupils can verify a claim, compare sources and explain why they accept or reject an AI answer.
